Welcome!

Thank you for joining me here in blog land. I have decided to begin this adventure in an effort to forward conversation about physical education in Vermont. It is through this medium that I hope we will share news and ideas to improve the health of our students state-wide. True, physical education is one piece of a complex education and health system - but as we know a very critical piece for life-long wellness.

Before we tie our shoes in anticipation of this journey first an explanation... Your comments or questions are welcomed and encouraged. Afterall this is the purpose of a blog. Please note, however, that I will moderate the discussion. All posts will first be previewed by me then made available for all to view. Let's strive for professional but provocative conversation.

  2. Do you receive doctor’s notes like this?

1 “She may run, walk and do P.E. activities that are not high impact to right arm.”

    2 “Minimal running and jumping.”

3 “No gym if asthma is a problem.”

What is a P.E. teacher to do? Can the student be involved in a tagging activity (1)? What happens if someone runs into her or she falls down?

How many activities can you think of that involve minimal running or jumping (2)? You become boxed in.

Shouldn't students who have asthma be working toward doing more activity to help with their condition?

Shouldn't the Vermont Medical Association and the P. E. Teachers Association be working together? Isn't the goal of our field to get students moving? Shouldn't doctors try an be more supportive and help us get students moving?

I feel it’s time to bring in Vermont Health Commissioner Wendy Davis (MD) to this discussion. Is it possible the commissioner could speak to doctors throughout the state about what I see is an on going problem? Physical Education may never be more important than now and students time isn't something we should be wasting.

  3. I very much encourage an open, collaborative converstaion between physical educators, medical community and parents. One task might be for this team to create a "Can Do" contract which details the options in physical education. This document can then be completed by a medical professional during evaulation of a student's condition. By partnering in this way we can all work toward improving student health in a way that fits the individual's needs. If you want to learn more about this please conatct me lindsay.simpson@state.vt.us
